The Ohio Senate has passed Senate Bill 52, which seeks to name parts of U.S. Route 33 and Interstate 70 in honor of Congressman David Hobson. State Senator Tim Schaffer, a Republican from Lancaster, sponsored the bill.
“Congressman Hobson was a dedicated public servant who was a mentor to many elected officials, including me,” said Senator Schaffer. “He was truly committed to his family, community, state, and country, and whose life and legacy of public service deserves to be memorialized as a leading example to future generations of Ohioans.”
Hobson’s career began with the Air National Guard during the Berlin Wall Crisis in 1961. He later served eight years in the Ohio Senate, where he held roles such as Majority Whip and President Pro Tempore. In 1990, he was elected to represent Ohio’s 7th Congressional District until his retirement in 2009.
“For 50 years, people in and around Fairfield County had been proposing the Lancaster Bypass but were unable to make it a reality,” Schaffer stated. “During his service in Congress, David Hobson secured the necessary federal funds, promoting quicker and safer travel south of Lancaster and Columbus.”
Another roadway segment honoring Hobson is on Interstate 70 in Springfield near where he lived with Carolyn, his wife of 65 years.
Senate Bill 52 will now proceed to the Ohio House for further consideration.
