Reading for Change on Dec. 21

Wednesday, December 21
1:00pm - 2:00pm

Main Library

A book discussion group where we look at issues of race, ethnicity, equity, and inclusion.

The Reading for Change Book Discussion Group will explore Race and Ethnicity Equity and Inclusion (REEI). Through group discussion, we will expand our knowledge of systemic racism and intersectional social justice issues, examining how we uphold these systems of inequality, and identify steps we can take to combat inequalities. We hope to provide an inclusive space to explore meaningful change.

This group will spend two or three months discussing one title so that we have time to unpack the topics in the book and look for ways we can impact change in the community. This book group will meet the last Wednesday of the month at 1:00.

In November and December we will discuss Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson.

Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn't commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship - and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.
