Five different RedHawks scored as the Miami University hockey team came from behind to defeat Niagara 5-3 in a non-conference matchup Friday. The RedHawks (7-10-2, 2-7-1 NCHC) rallied from 1-0 and 2-1 first-period deficits against the Purple Eagles (9-6-2, 5-5-2 AHA) before Brian Silver's game-winning goal with 8:18 to play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 11:02 1st (Niagara 1-0) | Niagara opened the game's scoring midway through the first period. A pass in the Miami zone was deflected off Albin Nilsson and picked up by Casey Carreau, who lofted it ahead to Jay Ahearn. His breakaway goal put the Purple Eagles up 1-0.
- 15:16 1st (Miami 1-1) | The RedHawks responded a few minutes later to tie up the score. A fight for puck control in Niagara's zone landed on the stick of William Hallén, who used some impressive stickhandling to even the score with a highlight-reel goal.
- 15:30 1st (Niagara 2-1) | Niagara finished the period on top after an attempted interception by the RedHawks allowed Lars Rodne to float the puck to Ryan Cox, who maneuvered past the Miami defense to slip in the 2-1 shot.
- 10:52 2nd (Miami 2-2) | Miami evened the score at 2-2 midway through the second period on Thomas Daskas' first goal of the season. Frankie Carogioiello took the puck along the wall in the Purple Eagles' zone, passing up to Daskas who executed a pinpoint shot from the side of the goal into the corner of the net.
- 3:21 3rd (Miami 3-2) | John Waldron gave the RedHawks their third goal and first lead of the game after receiving the puck off a Niagara defender's stick after a struggle against the wall. Waldron then delivered a shot into the net to put Miami up 3-2.
- 7:18 3rd (Niagara 3-3) | A faceoff win from Nilsson put Carreau in possession for the Purple Eagles, leading to an equalizing goal. Carreau made a pass over to Lucas Bahn, who took a long shot that was deflected off Nilsson's stick and under Ludvig Persson to make it 3-3.
- 11:42 3rd (Miami 4-3) | Miami took the lead for good on Silver's tally later in the period. After a faceoff, Carogioiello stole the puck from Niagara, skating back to deliver it to Daskas who let a shot rip toward the net. Silver redirected the puck into the goal to give Miami a 4-3 advantage.
- 19:03 3rd (Miami 5-3) | Matthew Barbolini put the game out of reach with an empty-netter in the final minute to secure a 5-3 victory for the RedHawks.
- Daskas was named the game's First Star after his first multi-point game as a RedHawk.
- Silver, who was named the Second Star, scored his first goal of the season and the second of his career.
- Carogioiello picked up the first two points of his career.
- Carogioiello, Daskas and Silver all recorded career-best +3 ratings.
- Waldron has goals in three straight games and five of his last six appearances.
- Persson made 28 saves for the RedHawks to earn the win.
- Hallén scored for the second consecutive game.
- Miami killed off all three Niagara power plays, including on a five-minute major.
