Miami Defeats Saint Mary-of-the-Woods 90-51

The Miami University men's basketball team won a non-conference game at Millett Hall against Saint Mary-of-the-Woods University Thursday night by a score of 90-51. Morgan Safford led the RedHawks (6-7) with 19 points and also recorded seven rebounds. Julian Lewis and Mekhi Lairy each added 13 points of their own. Davin Miller led the Pomeroys (6-9) with 12 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Miami got off to a 6-0 lead after back-to-back steals from Safford turned into transition points. The Pomeroys stayed resilient, tying the game at 10-10 with 16:16 left to play in the first half. The RedHawks led by seven points at 23-16 after Anderson Mirambeaux made a layup and hook shot.
  • With 8:22 to play, Miami stretched their lead to 30-19 thanks to a Kamari Williams three-point field goal and Safford layup. The Red and White outscored Saint Mary-of-the-Woods 21-6 to lead 51-25 going into the intermission.
  • Saint Mary-of-the-Woods scored the opening points of the second half, although Ryan Mabrey went on to respond with a shot from beyond the arc and a layup. It didn't stop there as Safford knocked down a three-pointer, and shortly after Lewis threw down a dunk to extend the lead to 64-35 with 13:05 to play.
  • From 8:32 to 6:39, Lairy scored eight points for the Red and White to pull ahead 81-43. Miami went on to secure a 90-51 victory over Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.
NOTES

  • Curtis Harrison IV made his season debut.
  • Bryson Tatum and Jaquel Morris were in the starting lineup for the first time in their careers. 
  • Safford tied his career-high of four steals for the second time this season.
  • The RedHawks had five double-figure scorers.
